A minimum of 13 people perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
